Grisslehamn – Herräng- Harg- Öregrund  approx. 70 km

“A journey from south to north visiting fishing ports and reminders of an industrial heritage”

This tour, which takes you from traditional fishing communities to industrial towns steeped in history, starts from Grisslehamn on Väddö’s northern tip. This lively fishing port has a ferry service to Åland and is known for artists and writers like Albert Engström and Vilhelm Moberg, who lived and worked in the area.

From Grisslehamn you ride south on Väddö over Trästa bridge to the mainland, then carry on until you reach the old industrial town of Herräng by Singö Bay. From the 1500s right up to the 1960s this was a centre  for iron ore mining. Now, for a few weeks each summer this is home to the world’s largest lindy hop camp – Herräng Dance Camp.

The route continues south to Hallstavik where there are restaurants and supermarkets for those who need supplies. Here you might like to spend some time in the heated outdoor pool and try the water slide.

On arrival in Harg the bike trail passes through the well-preserved Walloon mill. If you follow the old main road you’ll pass the mill’s old harbour warehouse, Järnboden, which now serves as an art gallery.
Then the trail takes you past Harg church, which dates from the 17th century, on to a nature reserve with ancient pines. Old country roads bordered by wild strawberries and flowers lead you on via Sandika to the region’s main town, Östhammar.

Östhammar, the municipality seat, has a friendly town centre  with restaurants and small boutiques. In the harbour you can eat well and admire local handicrafts, or why not join a tour of the quaint streets and let the guide share Östhammar’s eventful history with you.

Just west of Öregrund lies Sundboden, a natural port of call on this trip. The old log house by road 1100 is filled with home decor, furniture, clothing, and jewelry. There is also a cosy café where light lunches are served.
Öregrund itself is a picturesque little town with a vibrant nightlife in the summer. Take a while to stroll around the harbour which is flanked by bistros, cafés, exhibitions, and small boutiques selling arts and crafts.
By Sunnanö Bay, a few kilometers outside Öregrund, Bo&Kajak offers accommodation in cabins or rooms with bed and breakfast. Kayak rentals are available if you want to explore on your own, or if you prefer you can join a guided tour of the shimmering archipelago.

Don't miss a trip on the car ferry over to Gräsö which has miles of great bike trails to explore.
