Saint Birgitta was the daughter of lawyer Birger Persson who was King Birger's bishop and owned Finsta. Birgitta lived in Finsta during her first 11 years of life. After her mother's death, Birgitta moved in with her aunt in Östergötland. Birgitta got married when she was 13 years old.
Information
Birgitta was Sweden's first female author and the only Swede to found a monastic order. She died in Rome in 1373 and was canonized by Pope Boniface IX on October 7, 1391. On October 7, every year, Birgitta Day is celebrated in memory of Saint Birgitta. On October 1, 1999, she was ordained a patron saint by the Pope.
