Skebo Iron Works

skebo_edsbro

The facility at Skebo is Uppland’s oldest known iron works. There was already a foundry here in 1444. From the 1500s until 1733, the works were owned by the Tott family. In 1622 a new foundry was established here by Henrik Lemmens. Skebo held a unique position among Walloon works because of its access to special raw materials and manufacturing methods. The blast furnace monopoly moved to Edsbro Iron Works in 1686, but was owned by Skebo. Forging stayed in Skebo and a steel wiredrawing plant was erected in 1765 followed by a rolling mill in 1815.

Ownership changed many times until final shutdown in 1924. At that time Skebo was a large facility employing some 200 people. The works community’s white walled house, forge, mill, greenhouse, warehouse and streets are still there today. The iron works museum is located in the old fire station and depicts the site’s history, 0175-401 44, 405 20. Skebo Mansion from the 1770s features an organic gourmet restaurant in a pleasant environment for conferences and private functions, 0175-737 00. All of the hotel rooms are different and are named after various celebrities that have stayed there over the years. The Beatles were rumored to almost have performed here in the 1960s. But the fee of 1200 kr was too dear, so Skebo said no thanks! However, Skebo still has an active cultural association and often arranges events with other artists.
