Österbybruk, near the Dannemora mines, is the second largest iron works in Uppland. There were already blast furnaces, hammers and forges here in King Gustav Vasa’s era of the 1500s. The mansion with its wings, as well as the park and parts of the buildings on the works street, are from the 1760s. Artist Bruno Lilje fors’ studio features work by the artist along with ceramics by Triller. Several other exhibitions, craft work, ceramics and smithy shops can be found throughout the area. Don’t miss the guided tour of the Walloon forge and the ghost walks for the kids in the mansion.
Good food and coffee are served in the restaurant Gammel-Tammen and in Karins Stallcafé. A folk museum and several other museums depict area life in bygone days. Events – Nyckelharpsstämman (Key fiddle festival), the theatrical production “Jernets fångar”, Midsummer cele - brations, Eldfesten (Fire festival) and Vallonbruksmässan (Walloon Iron Works Fair) – attract large crowds to the area and Stordammen invites swimming and camping.
