Vaxholm

vaxholm

Vaxholm is the archipelago’s “capital” and the gateway to Roslagen
from Stockholm. The town is a junction for boat traffic traveling to
the central and northern archipelago – Roslagen’s archipelago.

Vaxholm’s municipality includes 64 islands. On the island of Vaxön
lies the little town of Vaxholm, perfect for exploring on foot or even
on a sightseeing cruise. You’ll find many charming shops with personal
service, several restaurants and cafés, and small, picturesque
galleries. And you are always close to the water! You can even take
a swim right in the middle of town if you like.

Don’t miss Galleri Lena Linderholm with a touch of Provence, and
the many small boutiques, or the town hall with a tourist center and
art museum featuring works by artist J.A.G. Acke. Also visit the Old
Homestead Museum with its little exhibition center. Enjoy a city
walk and learn more about Vaxholm’s colorful history!

Take a boat ride over to Vaxholm's citadel on the tiny island of
Vaxholmen and discover the Vaxholm Fortress Museum! Here you
can learn about the fort’s history, which dates back to the 1500s.
It was King Gustav Vasa that decided to build a fortress here as a
safeguard for Stockholm.

The Vaxholm Fortress Museum also has an exhibition about Ytterby
mine, where eight new elements were discovered! Various activities
are also arranged here, such as ”the prisoners in the fort” – fun for
young and old.
