Öregrund

oregrund

Öregrund was granted a town charter in 1491 and became an important
competitor to Stockholm when shipping flourished. The town
has a stormy past and suffered accidental fires as well as intentional
ones by both the Russians and the Danes. At the end of the 1800s,
a bath house company was established and the town became a spa
resort. A hotel, baths and a clubhouse were built. Visitors swarmed to
Öregrund and ornate summer houses with glass-enclosed verandas
were built, many of which are still standing today!

Öregrund is a picturesque summer town with a thriving entertainment
scene. Many restaurants, cafés, exhibitions, and small antique and
craft shops surround the harbor. Don’t miss the guided walking
tours and the community sing-along on Mondays, near the lightship,
Västra Banken. In summer, there are many activities and big events
like Östhammars Musikvecka (music festival), Öregrundsmåndag
(entertainment put on by prominent locals), the Roslagsloppet (offshore
boat race) and a resort festival.

In Öregrund you can watch the sun go down over the water from
one of the rocky cliffs that surround the city or while enjoying dinner
at the Seglarbaren restaurant.

Enjoy romantic accomodation at the Ankargården guest-house or
Floras Trädgård Hotel, a charming turn-of-the-century inn. You can
also rent bicycles, canoes and small boats in Öregrund. Take a boat
tour with the M/F Jenny or the Sunnan Express.
