Riding Roslagen’s railway from Stockholm, you’ll find the center
of southern Roslagen, Åkersberga, located in the municipality of
Österåker, 30 km north east of Stockholm. Here you will find attractive
surroundings, recreation, nature and of course, the archipelago.
There is also a modern mall with shops, cafés and restaurants.
Enjoy art and the show garden at Länsmansgården, plus more art
and handicraft work in Ekbacken park and Hagbystugorna, which
are near Österåker’s golf course.
Åkersberga is divided by Åker’s canal, a part of Långhundraleden,
which at one time was the Viking waterway between the Baltic Sea
and Uppsala. Långhundraleden is a popular boat and paddling route
and the old lock from 1825 is still in use. Österåker’s church dates
from the 1200s and for many hundreds of years was in the centre of
the area. At the beginning of the 1900s, Roslagen’s railway was built
to Åkersberga and extended to Österskär by the sea, where you’ll find
many ornate summer houses. In the 1950s, Åkersberga developed
rapidly from a station town to a modern and popular suburb.
Near the Roslagen railway’s terminus at Österskär, there is swimming,
beach walks and many ornate villas along Trälhavet. Near the steamboat
wharf is the M/S Rödlöga, which can take you further into Roslagen’s
archipelago.
